Ours To Keep

We’ve long grown
    Passed the age of grief.
We now know
    All the things we need.

Long I sat beneath a withered tree
Contemplating why in mid summer,
The leaves hadn’t been reborn in spring
And they laid scattered torn asunder.

Had this simple natural marvel
Given up on the chance to live?
Was it left bashful and startled
By something our world had did?

Are we to act in imitation?
Is this tree only our inclination
To give in before we take a risk?
Do we tuck tails or raise our fists?

We’re given the precious gift of air
Should it ever flee from our lungs
It’s our decision to make repairs
Or allow the final tune to be sung

We’ve long grown
    Passed the age of grief.
We now know
    All the things we need.
We now know
This life is ours to keep.
