An Inch Too High

The world is in front of me
calling my name.
Yet when I try to get closer
I’m pushed back again.

The glimpse of an open door,
a familiar face.
When studied a little further,
I see it’s merely a mistake.

All I want dangles over head
To a string it is tied
I leap but just can’t ascend
It’s just an inch too high

An evil fate has made plans
Should I reach so far
Dowsed in grease my tiny hands
Slippery are my palms

Now if ever in my grasp I gain
These dreams that I do seek
From my hand they’ll run away
And leave a future bleak
